Season Summary

This year was my eighth as head coach, overall record 71-23. Our winning percentage is 75.5%. We once again managed to overcome our success from last year and have continued our winning ways. Our Varsity staff remained intact Darren Trueblood coordinated the offense and coached backs and receivers, Brian Guilfoyle coached the offensive and defensive lines, and assisted with the offense and defensive schemes. Tom McCloskey assisted Brian and coached the special teams. Our staff works very well together the maturity and professionalism and comrade have made my job easy. Darren did an excellent job opening up the offense and making use of the variety of offensive weapons we had. Brian once again made personnel and technical adjustments that paid big dividends, throughout the season. Tom made an unselfish and loyal commitment to fill the needs of our staff from special teams to scouting to player development. Congratulations to the best staff in the north state. The J.V staff was headed again by Ray Hermann, but saw the replacement of Jim Sinyard with Mike Worley. Also Jon Lefler and Dan Koolhoven spent many hours assisting. Thru the staffs hard work and dedication throughout the summer and fall, the freshman team had an outstanding year, which culminated in a N.A.L Co-Championship. The football campaign began in spring with over 60 athletes on the tentative varsity roster. The varsity and J.V. squads completed weight training, a Lift-a-Thon, and ten days of practice. The graduating varsity players put on a farewell B.B.Q. for their teammates and the incoming 8th graders. This concluded our spring session. The summer began with less than hoped for attendance in the weight room. We participated in a passing league thru Shasta College, good participation resulted and we will probably re-enroll. During June we hosted two football camps thru Shasta College. The emphasis was put on working the J.V.'s with the varsity. Many positive results, staff participation was high and greatly appreciated. We concluded the summer with a 3-day 2-day night camp at McCloud High School. A great Experience for all, we hope to return to the mountains. Coming into the season we were down to 39 players. With many experienced backs and linemen returning we were rated #1 to start the year. We were undefeated Northern Athletic League Champions for the third year in a row. For the ninth straight year we defeated Shasta High in our annual rivalry, the River Bowl. Our overall home record at the Nest, since the opening of the stadium (October 1, 1999) is 14-4. This year we returned to the Northern Section Playoffs for the ninth consecutive year. This was the sixth time in nine years that we played in the finals for the section championship. As the Number 2 seed we defeated Pleasant Valley at the Nest 17-7 in the C.I.F. semi finals. This was probably as close as we have ever come to an undefeated season both our losses coming by a single point 20-21 to Corning, and 28-29 in overtime to Eureka. Our season was not without hardships and adversity. Several key players were struck with lingering injuries, at one time we had at least 6 starting positions out. But our young players stepped up big time. (D.B) John Freeman, Ben Jesson (R.B.), Pedro Smith (S), David Escoto (L), to name a few. By the time the last 1/3 of the season rolled around our seniors were getting healthy and our team was much better for the final push to the title. Our senior heavy offense averaged 31 pts a game with Newell (QB), Cruz (R.B.), Clapsaddle (WR), and Schohr (T.E.) combining for most of that. Coach Trueblood did a great job opening up the offense and spreading the ball around. We adopted some fly technique that blended well with our philosophy. Defensively we allowed 15.2 pts per game. Not great but good enough, we were much younger on defense and played 16 to 17 players, which should help with experience next year. Special teams were highlighted by many exciting plays by K.C. Clapsaddle. We looked forward to the many juniors returning. SEASON HIGHLIGHTS: The come from behind wins in the semi final and final games - great plays by Blanc (WR), Newell (QB), and Schohr (LB/TE). Five out of eight years playing in the section finals. The 1st Camp McCloud. Eight straight victory in the River Bowl. The goal line stand at Pleasant Valley. Working with John Ryan and Tyler Schohr for three years. The J.V. teams attitude and success. The Frosh  Co-Championship. It was a great year and a rewarding season we were ranked #1 at the start and finished #1. Good players, Good coaches, Great attitudes. REBUILD?....HELL NO, RELOAD!!
