Over View 2001

This was my ninth year as Head coach and once again we found a way to overcome last years success. Our Overall record is now 80-26, with a winning percentage of 76%. I am proud of the fact that our program has reached the eighty-win plateau in just nine years, basically averaging nine wins a season. These statistics separate us from all other programs in the Northern Section, but the true significance that these numbers represent is consistency over time. Our varsity staff remained the same. Darren Trueblood coordinated the offense and coached backs and receivers, but he did much more than that. Unselfishly giving more of his time to the program, helping me in many of my duties. Brian Guilfoyle coached the lines and integrated schemes on both sides of the ball. Tom McCloskey assisted Brian and also coached the special teams. Ron Wooley once again headed the J.V. staff. Scott Sutfin and Robert Boone assisted throughout the year. Ron is truly a dear friend who took duties above and beyond his job description. He spent many hours before, during and after the season, working for the benefit of the entire Enterprise football program. The freshman staff was headed by Ray Hermann and assisted by Mike Worley. They had the additional help from walk on coaches Cliff Curry, Dan Koolhoven and Bob Shufelberger. Their dedication and loyalty to the program is greatly appreciated. I am very fortunate to work with the most dedicated, loyal, and experienced staff in the North State.

Season Summary

We began the 2001 campaign with 70 prospects signing up in January. Weight lifting and conditioning continued thru May. We completed 9 days of combined J.V. and varsity spring practice. The culminated with the seniors hosting a farewell B.B.Q. The incoming eight graders were invited and given an introduction to the Hornet football program. The summer weight lifting workouts began in June continuing until August. Workouts were generally well attended. The varsity skill players and a few J.V. players participated in the Shasta College passing league. Attendance was sporadic. The staff once again hosted two football camps thru Shasta College. The freshman camp run by Ray Hermann and Mike Worley was a success attended by many of our incoming freshman. The J.V. and Varsity camp was combined. The coaches and players worked side by side with close articulation. Much progress was made and set the tone for the opening of official practice in August. We started official practice August 6th with two a day practices at Enterprise. Our roster was down to approx 40 players, a common attrition from spring to August. We conclude our first week of practice with our 2nd annual trip to McCloud high school. The Varsity camp was once again a success. Friday and Saturday camp activities included many practice sessions, great meals at Raymond's restaurant, and a parent, player train ride. Steve Westlake graciously provided training for the weekend, Mr. Carpenter and Mr. Angley and several J.V/Frosh staff volunteered their time and efforts to make our stay in the mountains a successful start to a rigorous season. We concluded our second week of practices with out annual Black and Gold scrimmage. (Aug 18th) Parents and players from all three levels participated. A parent meeting -BBQ, and fund raiser concluded the days activities. Our team started the season slowly, with two home losses. (Corning and P.V.) a big win on the road vs. Chico helped our young offense get on track. Starting Sept. 21 vs. Foothill we put together eight straight wins. We were much more experienced on the defensive side of the ball -allowing only 12 points per game. Clapsaddle, Soho, Christensen, Smith, Gelms, Francis, George, and Jesson all played mayor roles that allowed our younger players to gain experience and confidence. Three outstanding players made mayor contribution for our underclassman, C.L Blanc (Jr.), Brody Angley (Soph), and Ryan Erro (Jr.). Quarterback Blanc and running back Angley were the two best backfield tandems by seasons end in the Northern Section. Blanc guided the offense to some impressive season stats, 29.7 points per game average, 3050 rushing yards, 1264 passing yards. Angley ended the season as the Northern Section scoring leader 156 points, 1229 yards. Rushing and 11.5 yds per carry average, in league. Erro had an outstanding season at cornerback. His big play ability and tenacity on defense helped propel us to victory in the most critical games of the season. Key interceptions for touchdowns vs. Shasta and West Valley led to River Bowl and N.A.L. championships. His two interceptions vs. P.V. in the C.I.F. semi finals secured our victory and a birth in the C.I.F. championship. Erro led the team in interceptions (7) and finished the season as our top pass defender. We completed the year undefeated Northern Athletic League Champions. For the ninth straight year we defeated Shasta High in our annual rivalry, the River Bowl. Our overall home record at the Nest, since the opening of the stadium (Oct 1, 99) is 14-4. We returned to the Northern Section Playoffs for the ninth consecutive year. This was the sixth time in nine years that we played in the finals for the C.I.F. championship. As the number two playoff seed we defeated P.V at the Nest 17-7. And lost the C.I.F. championship, in a rain soaked heartbreaker at Lassen 20-17. Our final overall record was 9-3. We are proud of our accomplishments. We have no regrets! We look forward to next season with determined optimism. Once again our greatest challenge will be to overcome last year success.
RE-BUILD?... HELL NO RELOAD!

We concluded this year of Hornet football with a touch of sadness and fond memories of Lou Mello, who passed away in September. His love and devotion to Enterprise Football. For more than twenty years will never be forgotten.
